Fuse Board Upgradesin Wimbledon
Old fuse boards and consumer units replaced in SW19 homes and flats, with RCD protection, testing and a certificate at the end.
If your fuse box still has rewireable fuses, or the consumer unit is old enough that you are unsure what protects what, fuse board replacement in Wimbledon is worth a proper look. TH Electricians LTD is an electrical firm based in Sutton, and we replace fuse boards and consumer units in homes and rental properties across SW19. This page explains what the upgrade changes, why older boards are singled out, and how the job is finished.

What a fuse board actually does
The fuse board, or consumer unit, is where the electricity supply is divided into circuits: one for sockets, another for lights, another for the cooker, and so on. Each circuit has a protective device that cuts the power if something goes wrong, such as an overload or a fault.
In an older board that device is often a fuse wire in a holder, which you rewire by hand after it blows. A modern consumer unit uses circuit breakers instead, and adds protection against earth faults. That extra layer is the main reason an upgrade matters, and it is why an old board is worth checking even when the lights come on as normal.

Fuse board replacement in Wimbledon: what changes
When we replace a board, the old unit is removed and a new consumer unit is fitted in its place, with the circuits reconnected and identified. The new unit brings:
- RCD or RCBO protection, which switches off quickly if a dangerous earth fault is detected
- circuit breakers that can be reset with a switch, rather than fuse wire
- clear labelling, so each circuit can be identified when something trips
- a board designed for the way a home is used today
Before the new board goes in, the circuits it will protect are tested, because a modern board can reveal problems that an old one was hiding.

Older Wimbledon houses and why boards get looked at
Much of Wimbledon Village and the streets around the Common is large Victorian and Edwardian housing, and South Wimbledon is mostly Victorian terraces. Boards in older houses are often the first thing that gets attention, because they are the part of the installation that gets replaced least often, and the one place where a change makes a real difference to protection.
On the Raynes Park side, where 1930s semis are common, an original or early replacement board can still be in use. Age alone does not decide anything. We look at the board, the type of protection it has and the state of the circuits behind it.

Flats, conversions and rented homes
Around the town centre there are many flats and period conversions. A fuse board in a flat serves that flat only, but the building may have shared supply arrangements that affect how and when work can be done. If you own or let a flat, it helps to mention this on the first call.
Landlords often ask for a fuse board upgrade after an inspection. An Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, records the condition of the installation and lists anything that needs attention. Where the report points to an old board, we can quote to replace it, and the finished work is certified so it can be kept with your property records.

Upgrading alongside other electrical work
A new board is often fitted together with other work, because it saves visiting twice. If you are planning any of the following, mention it when we speak:
- a kitchen refit with new circuits or a new cooker supply
- an extension or loft conversion
- a partial or full rewire
- adding an electric vehicle charger or other higher-demand equipment
The board has to cope with what you add to it, so it makes sense to plan the two together. If a rewire is being considered as well, our house rewire page for Wimbledon explains that side.

What happens on the day, and afterwards
Because the board is where the supply is divided, the power to the property has to be switched off while the old unit is disconnected and the new one is fitted. We will explain what that means for you before we start, so you can plan around it.
Once the new consumer unit is connected, every circuit is tested. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work in a home, so it comes under Part P of the Building Regulations. We are NAPIT registered, and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate showing what was fitted and the results of the tests.

Fuse board questions
Do I need to replace my fuse board?
Not automatically. A board with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection is a strong candidate. An inspection and test tells you the condition of the board and the circuits, and whether replacement is advisable.
What is an RCD and why does it matter?
An RCD monitors the flow of current in a circuit and cuts the power very quickly if it detects a leak to earth, such as through a person or a damaged cable. It adds a layer of protection older fuses do not give.
Is a consumer unit the same as a fuse board?
Yes. Consumer unit is the modern name for the board that divides the supply into circuits and protects them. People often still say fuse box or fuse board, and the words are used interchangeably.
Will I get paperwork when it is finished?
Yes. The replacement is certified under Part P, and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate that records the work and the test results.
