Working in terraced houses

Much of Earlsfield is Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and terraces have particular electrical habits. Rooms are compact, floors run in a single direction, and the consumer unit is often somewhere awkward. Cable routes matter, because a good rewire depends on getting cables to the right places without more damage to decoration than necessary.

Before we quote, we look at how the house is put together and where the existing cables run. We explain the options in plain language, including how much floor lifting or chasing into walls is likely to be needed. A terrace that has been extended at the back, or had a loft room added, often has newer circuits connected to an older core, and we check that the two work properly together.

Fuse board upgrades without fuss

A new consumer unit is one of the most common jobs in older terraces, and it is usually straightforward. The old board is removed, the circuits are checked and connected to a modern unit, and every circuit is tested before the supply is switched back on.

We ask a few things first: where the board is, what type it is and whether the house has been altered. On the day, we tell you how long the power will need to be off so that you can plan around it. When we finish, you receive certification and we show you which circuit is which. If testing turns up a circuit that cannot safely be reconnected, we tell you at once and explain what to do about it.

Rewires and partial rewires

If the wiring in your Earlsfield home is decades old, with cloth-covered cable, few sockets or repeated tripping, a rewire may be the right answer. Homes rarely need the same thing, so we look at the specific problem before proposing anything.

Options we discuss include:

  • a full rewire of the whole house
  • a partial rewire covering a floor or a few circuits
  • a fuse board upgrade with targeted repairs
  • leaving sound wiring alone and fixing only what is faulty

We explain how each would proceed and what it disturbs. Notifiable work is certified under Part P and tested at the end.

Landlord work and EICRs for rented flats

Rented flats and houses are common in Earlsfield, and landlords need to know the installation is in good order. An Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, is an inspection and test of the existing wiring that produces a written report on its condition.

We carry out EICRs and landlord electrical improvements. If a report lists work that needs doing, we can quote to complete it and re-test afterwards, although you can use another contractor if you prefer. For a landlord with a single flat or several, we plan the visit around access, so tell us when you call how the property is let and who holds the keys.

Sockets, lighting and awkward faults

In a compact home, every socket and light counts. We add sockets where you use them, put in better lighting in kitchens, hallways and bedrooms, and fit outside lights, dimmers and controls. Small jobs done neatly make a noticeable difference to how a house feels.

Faults are different from planned work. A circuit that trips, a flickering light or a dead socket needs testing to find the true cause. We isolate the circuit, measure it and trace the problem, and then tell you what failed and what fixing it involves. That way you can decide with the full picture instead of paying for replacements that turn out to be unnecessary.

Smart home and renovation projects

Earlsfield homeowners often refurbish kitchens or convert lofts to gain space, and each project changes what the electrics need to do. Planning circuits, sockets and lighting before the plasterer arrives saves disruption later.

We carry out electrical upgrades during renovation and can fit smart home and lighting systems, for example lighting scenes or controls you can use from a phone. If you are working with a builder, we agree with them when we need to be on site. Tell us what you are planning and we will explain what the wiring needs to include.

FAQ

Electricians in Earlsfield: common questions

How disruptive is a rewire in a terraced house?

Some disruption is unavoidable, as cables have to be routed through floors and walls. We explain beforehand what will be lifted or opened up and in what order, and we can often work room by room.

How long will the power be off for a new fuse board?

The supply has to be off while the board is changed. We tell you what to expect before we start, and we test every circuit before switching everything back on.

Do you do landlord safety reports in Earlsfield?

Yes. We carry out EICRs for landlords, giving a written account of the installation's condition and any recommended work. Where remedial work is needed we can quote for it.

Can you fit smart lighting in an older terrace?

Usually, yes, although older wiring can limit the choices. We look at the existing installation first and explain what is practical before agreeing the work.
