Start with what you want to see

A CCTV system works best when it is designed around a purpose. Some people want to see who is at the front door. Others want to cover a side passage, a rear garden, a garage, a yard or a shop entrance. Those are different jobs, and they lead to different camera positions.

When you call, tell us what worries you and what you would want a recording to show. We can then talk through where cameras would need to go to cover it, and just as usefully, where a camera would add nothing. A short list of priorities, in order, makes the plan much easier to draw up and keeps the system from growing into more cameras than the property needs.

CCTV installers Wimbledon: electricians first

A camera system is an electrical installation. Every camera needs power, and the recorder and network equipment need a safe supply. Cables have to be routed, fixed and protected from damage, sometimes through outside walls.

Because we are electricians, that part is our everyday work. We deal with the supply, the cable routes and any connection to your existing electrics, and we test the finished system. Where the wiring behind it needs attention, we can tell you so, rather than leave you to find out later.

Different properties, different layouts

Wimbledon has a wide mix of buildings, and the mix affects how a system is laid out.

  • Large Victorian and Edwardian houses in the Village and around the Common often have several sides that need thinking about, with side access and long rear gardens.
  • Victorian terraces, as in South Wimbledon, tend to need the front door and the back access covered, with little room to hide cabling.
  • Flats and period conversions usually share entrances and communal areas, which changes what can be fitted and who has to agree to it.

We look at your own property before suggesting anything, because the right layout for one house is wrong for the next.

Cabling, power and keeping it tidy

How cameras are connected is a decision we make with you. Cable can be run through the fabric of the building or routed neatly along the outside, and we aim to keep it out of sight and protected from weather and tampering.

We also plan where the power comes from. Depending on the layout, cameras may draw from a nearby circuit, or from a supply taken back to a central point where the recorder sits. Deciding this at the start avoids trailing leads and cameras that stop working because they share a socket with something else.

Recording and viewing

A camera is only useful if its footage can be found when you need it. A CCTV system usually includes a recorder that stores footage, and many systems can also be viewed from a phone or tablet. We explain what is included in the system we suggest and how you would look back at a recording.

It is worth deciding before installation how long you would like footage kept and who in the household or business needs access. Those choices affect the equipment, so we ask about them early. It also helps to say whether the system will sit in a home, a shop or an office, since a business often needs footage that several people can check.

Privacy and where cameras point

Cameras on a home in a built-up area can capture more than your own property, including a neighbour's garden or the pavement. There are rules on how images of other people may be used, so it is sensible to aim cameras at your own boundary and entrances and to be open with neighbours about them.

We will discuss camera angles with you and suggest positions that cover what you need without pointing further than necessary. If you run a business, or your property has communal areas, the questions are a little different, and we can talk them through.

Installing CCTV alongside other electrical work

CCTV is often fitted at the same time as other jobs, such as a new consumer unit, a rewire, outside lighting or a refit of a shop or office. Running cable while walls or ceilings are already open saves disruption, and a new circuit for the system can be added at the same time.

We work in Wimbledon and nearby Raynes Park, Wimbledon Park, Southfields and Merton Park, coming from our base in Sutton. Call us with the address and what you would like covered, and we can talk it through.

FAQ

CCTV questions

Do I need permission to install CCTV at home?

For your own house you do not normally need permission, but cameras should not point at neighbouring homes or public areas more than necessary. Flats, leased properties and communal areas may need agreement from the landlord or management.

Can CCTV be wired in without visible cables?

Often much of it can be concealed, depending on the building. We look at how the property is built and aim to keep cabling neat and protected, and we tell you where cable must be visible.

Can I watch the cameras from my phone?

Many modern systems allow this. We can explain what the system we recommend offers and how remote viewing would be set up for you.

Do you install CCTV for businesses as well as homes?

Yes. We install CCTV for commercial premises such as shops and offices, as part of our wider commercial electrical work, as well as for homes.
